A number of years ago the DPOC took the position to seek funding under the budget as we felt that disabled people needed to develop models of supports that are user-led and within ones own community.
We have successfully supported individuals in learning new skills leading to employment opportunities within their own community e.g. carpentry, IT skills, and have a computer training room with a qualified tutor in our office for this purpose. We also support people to take up activities of their choice e.g. swimming, dress making, mainstream adult education.
We wanted to ensure that the funding is enabling disabled people to be empowered to participate in the activities of the DPOC, their communities and family life.
